Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday  2020

• (for adults and groups without children)
• To families, friends, small group classes and sub groups of classes in accordance with current guidelines for safe and social distancing.
• We would like to encourage you to gather together around the table for Maundy Thursday this April 9, 2020.  We encourage you to “bring-a-dish” and share a meal together.  It is at the table “Maundy Thursday” is all set.
• One person may lead the readings, or many persons may rotate as “the one” reader.
• We recommend sharing an entire meal as part of this liturgy, however it may be more practical to simply have supplies for communion and foot or hand washing.
• Having hand sanitizer available is recommended throughout.

One ( _________ ) reads before eating meal together:

• Matthew 26: 17-19; 26-29
• On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal…

One:  In the upper room of our hearts we gather as a family

Many:  We give thanks to God who has prepared this table

One:  We remember that God was faithful to deliver the people from Egypt

Many:  We ask in faith again for God to deliver us 

One ( _________  or another reads):

• Matthew 26: 26-29
• While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the[d] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Share in the food at the table together as a family in Christ ever mindful with each bite we remember the body of Jesus and with each drink we remember the life-blood of Christ. Or if desired in place of an entire meal, this communion practice is recommended)

One ( _________  or another) takes bread/cracker or food of choice and shares with all at the table:

One reads: Receive this, the body of Christ, as we eat of this together let bread become one with our bodies.  As God is one, as God has reconciled and redeemed us, let us also be reconciled and redeemed with one another.

One (___________or another) takes cup/drink and:

One reads: Receive this, the blood of Christ, given on the cross with great price and given to the whole world freely in complete grace.  As this cup fill us, may we overflow with the grace of God.

As the meal is shared or after communion is shared, One ( _______ or another reads):

• There are three titles the Christian church commonly uses for the table:  communion, eucharist and the Lord’s Supper.
• Sharing a meal together, is likely how the early-Christian church practiced “communion.”  The word “communion” itself drawing those around the table into a common unity or in other words, Christ.  Just like we share a meal together, we share a unity in Christ.  As God is one, we too are made one.
• “Eucharist” from the Greek verb to “give thanks,” or “thanksgiving.”  Whenever and wherever we give thanks to God, we are at the table of Christ.  In all things, we give thanks.  Take a moment for each person at the table to name something they are thankful for today.   Maybe you give thanks to God for health, or for friends, or loved ones, or rest or even a new book.
• The “Lord’s Supper” is a designation for worship at the table.  It is this “Last Supper” on Holy Thursday, that we remember, this is all the Lord’s.  The table, the cross, the resurrection, the air in our lungs and the food at this table.  It is all the Lord’s.  Take a moment to name something at the table or in your life or in the world, and say, “It is the Lord’s.”

After the meal is shared, One (_______ or another) reads:

• John 13: 2b-5
• … And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him….

One:  Let us remove our shoes

Many:  For we are standing on holy ground

One:  This ground is holy not because of steeple

Many:  This home is house of worship, and all of this is Holy.

As those who feel comfortable remove their shoes and One (________ or another) reads:

• John 13: 12-16; 34-35
• After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord — and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them… I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

One (________ or another) reads:

The word “Maundy” is from the Latin, for commandment.  All of the Law, all of The Commandments, all of the teachings of Jesus is this, that we love one another.

One:  Just as Christ has served

Many:  We too will serve one another

One:  Just as Christ has loved

Many:  We too will love one another 

Wash and dry one another’s feet (or hands if preferable).

Sing: “Doxology” and/or pray the Lord’s Prayer together

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise God all creatures here below;

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise God, the source of all our gifts!

Praise Jesus Christ, whose pow’r uplifts!

Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

 

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

• The friends and students of Jesus came and asked, “Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?” Jesus said, “Go into Jerusalem and there will be a man that is expecting us who will provide a space on the roof of his home.”  So the disciples did as Jesus told them, and they got ready for the Passover meal…

One (_______ or another) reads:

The Passover meal remembers that God was faithful to lead the people out of slavery in Egypt and out of captivity in Babylon.  The Passover is a time where people remember “God is faithful and good.”

One (__________ or another) reads:

• Matthew 26: 26-29
• While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after prayed for it, he broke it, shared it, and said, “Take, this bread and eat it; the bread represents me.”  Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from this cup, all of you; and know that my promises and ministry is for you and is for forgiveness and love for the whole world. I tell you, there will be another day where we get to share in this meal together, in heaven, the kingdom of God!”

Eat the meal together

• Sharing a meal together, is how the Christian church has always been a family.  Some of us have earthly families, and we all have a Christian family, a church.   God is one and so God brings us together too, especially at the dinner table.
• One of the best ways we grow together with God and with each other is by saying “thank you.” Let’s all take a moment to say one thing we are thankful for- Maybe you give thanks to God for food, or for friends, or family, or fun or even a new book.  We can be grateful for anything and everything! 
• This was the last meal that Jesus had with his closest friends and students, the disciples— that is this was the last meal Jesus had before the cross and before Easter when Jesus rose from the grave.  Jesus says there will also come another day where we all gather around God’s table again.  When we eat around the table together we are practicing for heaven! 

After the meal is shared, One (________ or another) reads:

• John 13: 5-5
• (After supper, Jesus) got up from the table, took off his robe, and found a towel.  Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him…. 

One:  Let’ take our shoes off and everyone say “we are standing on holy ground."

Many:  We are standing on holy ground

One:  This ground is holy not because we are at a church building

Many:  All of this is holy, because God is here with us.

As those who feel comfortable remove their shoes, One (_______ or another) reads:

• John 13: 12-16; 34-35
• Then Jesus said, “Since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. This is the great commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.  This is how the world knows that God is love, when we love one another.

One (__________ or another) reads:

Wow this is incredible. This is really great. What Jesus really wants is for us to love one another.  When we love one another, the whole world sees God’s love.  And one of the ways we love one another is by serving each other.   So tonight we are going to wash each others feet or hands, just like Jesus washed his friends feet as a way to show he loved and served his friends and the world. 

Wash and dry one another’s feet (or hands if preferable). 

Sing “Jesus loves Me” or “Doxology” and/or pray the Lord’s Prayer together

Jesus loves me this I know

For the bible tells me so

Little ones to Him belong

They are weak but He is strong

Yes Jesus loves me…

The bible tells me so

Lenten Lunch Online 3

Welcome to 2nd Baptist Blog.  As you may know, we have cancelled our onsite programming for the safety and sake of the well being of our congregation and community (read more about that here).

Today, we would have continued and concluded our Lenten Lunch Series, which is a time we gather for worship and fellowship during the lunch hour during Lent. 

Today we will again remember an inspirational word of grace and hope from our friend and former pastor, Rev. Dr. John Claypool (bio here).  The message today was from July, 1985-- when I was just a hint within my mother's womb. 

I thank you for your flexibility  during this season.  I hope you will return to secondb.org and this blog during Holy Week for our Maundy Thursday and Good Friday programming.
